It's All Vanity

Vanity license plates are a significant thing for car owners in Qatar. Apparently, high premiums are paid for the privilege of sporting these unique plates, or at the very least, high-ranking connections (wasta) are used to secure them.

Unlike in some countries, custom vanity plates are not available. So motoring show-offs have to make do with unique number combinations, like a lot of repeating digits (maybe '77777').

Another favorite is having a plate with a low number of digits. Instead of a car registered as '987654', it's much cooler to have '123' on your bumper.

Who are these people, who feel the need to display their wealth on a license plate? More importantly, what kind of cars do they drive?

Here is the Qatar One Thousand; the cars wearing three-digit plates in the country of Qatar.

I saw the "123" recently, a Porsche Cayenne parked outside Villaggio. Unfortunately I did not take a snapshot.
